Powering Regional Reliability
Selected by the states’ grid operator PJM Interconnection, the Kammer–Juniata Transmission Project would increase access to safe, reliable and low-cost electricity for homes and businesses across West Virginia and Pennsylvania – especially during periods of extreme weather and peak energy demand. PJM is the regional grid operator responsible for ensuring power flows reliably for 65 million people across 13 states and the District of Columbia.
Why It’s Important
Electricity demand across the PJM region is projected to grow significantly over the coming decades due to population growth, economic development and new electricity-dependent industries.
As part of its long-term planning, PJM has identified increasing strain on the regional electric grid, including system reliability risks if new infrastructure is not built. Through its formal planning process, PJM evaluated multiple solutions to address these challenges and, in February 2026, selected the Kammer-Juniata Transmission Project as the best long-term, low-cost project to strengthen the grid’s backbone. The project would improve how electricity flows across the region, helping ensure power can be delivered reliably when and where it is needed most.
Ongoing Routing Study
The Kammer–Juniata Transmission Project is in the early stages of development.
No route has been selected at this time. We will conduct a routing study to identify and evaluate potential route options. The routing process will involve collecting data to help identify constraints, such as sensitive habitats and cultural resources, as well as opportunities like paralleling existing transmission lines, roadways and other linear infrastructure.
We will conduct open houses and surveys and provide information through our website and project hotline. We are meeting with local and state leaders, state and federal agencies, landowners, community members and other stakeholder groups. Input is essential and will play a direct role in shaping the project as it moves forward.
Project Timeline
The timeline is an estimate and may change as the project develops.
About the Project Team
The Kammer–Juniata Transmission Project will be built by Kammer Juniata Transmission LLC, a joint venture between NextEra Energy Transmission and Exelon Transmission Company.
NextEra Energy Transmission and its subsidiaries bring extensive experience developing, designing, constructing, operating and maintaining innovative, low-cost transmission infrastructure across 19 states and Canada — improving grid efficiency and reliability. Exelon is one of the nation’s largest utility companies and has the privilege to serve customers in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Illinois, New Jersey, Maryland and the District of Columbia. Through its transmission and utility businesses, Exelon brings decades of experience developing, operating and maintaining critical energy infrastructure that supports safe, reliable and affordable electric service.
Together, the Kammer-Juniata team brings decades of experience developing and operating major energy infrastructure.
